New Community Garden on Manistique

Those traveling through the Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood may notice beautiful new community gardens taking root on various streets. The most recent addition is the Manistique Community Garden, located at 870/876 Manistique Street.  Gardeners and neighborhood residents Myrtle and Wayne built a natural garden border with branches and tree trunks to bring definition to their space. They are looking forward to receiving lumber for three raised beds from the Garden Resource Program and planting their cold crops and seeds.

Lakewood Community Garden Builds Raised Beds

Last Saturday community leaders and volunteers joined together for a day of construction and shoveling in the Lakewood Community Garden. Over 15 residents and volunteers joined in the effort throughout the day. Five 4′ x 8′ and two 3′ x 3′ garden beds were constructed from untreated lumber and filled with topsoil. Thank you to all of our volunteers for the time and energy you spent cleaning up the vacant lots, prepping the lumber, and building the beds! Also, a special thank you to the Junior League of Detroit and Jefferson East Business Association for providing the funds to purchase the lumber and topsoil for the project.

Block Club to Clean Up Vacant Lots

The Lakewood South Block Club will be making an impact on their block this Saturday morning, March 21. They will be cleaning up two city-owned vacant lots (838 and 848 Lakewood Street) in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood in preparation for a community garden. Over the next month, the block club has several planned gardening events, including a garden design meeting and a work-day kick-off in April. The block club is a member of the Garden Resource Program in Detroit, which provides packets of seeds, transplants, and technical support to community gardens for only $20.

If you are interested in volunteering  with the Lakewood South Block Club or would like to learn how you can contribute to this effort through monetary or in-kind donations, please contact Caitlyn Pisarski at (313) 822-0062 or
